We all know that, to power up a vehicle “engine” is necessary unless it runs with another technology. These engines are many in types. Motorcycle engines are typically two-stroke or four-stroke internal combustion engines, few other engine types are also seen, such as Wankels and electric motors, but those are small in number that people uses. Every combustion engines contains cylinder inside the engine for exhaust system and to fire up the engine and run the vehicle. Every cylinder contains vales to intake the air and fuel for mixing them and also tires them out. We already knew that maximum four strokes engine comes with two valves per cylinder but nowadays 4 Valve engines are also seen. Already without knowing we are using it and having the advantages as well. Talking about popular 150cc bikes Yamaha R15 series, Honda CBR 150R, Bajaj Discover 125 ST, Bajaj Pulsar NS 160, Apache RTR 160 4V these motorcycles already includes this thing. Today’s discussion is about those 4 valve engine. These days one of the biggest question is what are the importance of 4 Valves inside the engines cylinder and how do the works. So from bellow the lines let us know something about this thing which might be at help.
What is 4 Valve Technology?
As we have said most of the four stroke engines contain two valves per cylinder inside the engine and these valves are actually used for exhaust and air fuel mixture. On that note talking about 4V engines might have something new to offer, yes it has! 4 Valve Technology which is mostly used for motorcycles includes two intakes & two exhaust valves in the engine. So in simple words 4V means 4 valves in engine cylinder. As it is mentioned two valves for air fuel mixture inlet or intake and other two for exhaust outlet from cylinder, for that reason it offers better combustion in cylinder and power generation. Because of increased air-fuel intake this kind of engine offers efficient combustion and more power output for the users.
4 Valve Technology and how it works
As we already know this technology adds in Four Valves, two each for the inlet and exhaust. So two inlet valves mean more opening of the area to suck the air-fuel mixture and the other two valves of the engine can make better combustion to get more power output. The two inlet valves increase the area of the air intake and it allows more air fuel mixture to get into the cylinder. Therefore, it increases the amount of air than the other designs of engine. As the result better power, lesser emission and fuel efficiency is provided by the engine. The newer generation engines with the 4 Valve Technologies are now being commonly used in both cars & bikes alike.
Advantages of 4 Valve engine
As we were using two valves per cylinder engine then why should we switch to this new technology that might be the question for now? For clearing that hesitation few reasons are behind. 4V engines have some advantages over 2 valve engines. Two valves are usually less efficient, for several reasons. People have listed a lot of good side of 4V after using already, so more technical ones are given bellow.
First, we have to recall what everyone else is saying, 4 valves give more area on the cylinder head for air to flow through. More airflow means more power and better efficiency. If we will see diagram we will see that the 2-valve design uses 50% of the area inside the engine, while 4 valves use around 80% of the area. So logically the intake and exhaust both will be intense and High performance can be expected indeed.
A second benefit of a 4-valve designed engine is the spark plug can be placed at the center of the cylinder head. If we see in the 4 valve diagram, there’s naturally a space at the center of the head to place the plug. As the spark plug is what triggers the fuel to burst out, putting it at the center results in a more effective combustion. It allows getting more power and a cleaner burning with the same amount of fuel.
Third advantage can be said the mileage. As we now know that this kind of engine comes with better air-fuel mixture and the burning is good so the use of the fuel will be perfect then before which will surly increase the mileage.
Finally lesser emission will be provided that means because of the exhaust system not that much carbon will be released which causes air pollution or harmful elements. So that is also a good thing for the overall eco system. Engine remains safe and the environment remains safer because of best quality combustion inside the engine.
These advantages are the top most important among all and these are also admired by popular manufacturing brands. Talking about the renowned motorcycle brands According to Bajaj Auto, the cylinder-head with 4-Valve technology increases the combustion area covered by the valves and takes more than 80% of space inside the cylinder; on the other side 2 valves designed engine covers almost 50%. As a result, it increases engine’s performance such as power, throttle response, pick up at all engine speeds. This also results better fuel economy and also helps in low emission. Not only Bajaj but also Yamaha is using this technology for their bikes. Yamaha's 4-Valve design features a single spark plug which is positioned at the center of the combustion chamber. This results in better spreading of the flame and enables highly efficient combustion. It also gives steadier engine performance at low-speed and a better acceleration feeling.
On the basis of these popular companies we can see they are already using this technology and having good output from those bikes which we have mentioned earlier. So it can be admired that surely there are some important advantages which 4V engines includes and for that reason they are offering first rated performance than before.
