In 1989, CFMoto started its journey as a manufacturer of motorcycle engines and parts in the city of Hangzhou, China, gaining global recognition as a high-performance motorcycle producer.
It took them nearly eight years from the establishment to develop their first proprietary liquid-cooled engine. Subsequently, the company quickly evolved into a full-fledged motorcycle manufacturer. In addition to supplying vehicles to various government agencies, including police and fire departments in China, they have established themselves as a reliable manufacturer of advanced feature-rich motorcycles at competitive prices in the global market.
Even though more than 200 motorcycle manufacturers are there in China, only a small number of them use and promote their own brand name globally. CFMoto is one of them.
A significant milestone in CFMoto's global expansion is its partnership with KTM, a well-established and renowned Austrian motorcycle manufacturer. KTM was founded in 1934 and became very successful due to its off-road and adventure bikes and has achieved numerous successes in motorsports. The mutual cooperation between CFMoto and KTM has been long-standing. In 2011, CFMoto and KTM entered into a joint partnership.
In 2014, their agreement was updated, and CFMoto began assembling KTM Duke 200 and 390 cc motorcycles for sale in China. This allowed CFMoto to gain direct exposure to KTM's technology and further enhance their expertise.
In 2017, the relationship between CFMoto and KTM became even closer. To improve their market presence, they launched a new joint venture called CFMOTO-KTMR2R, with CFMoto owning 51% and KTM owning the remaining 49%. This joint venture laid the foundation for a new factory in Hangzhou, China, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 motorcycles.
In this newly established production facility, CFMoto gained access to KTM's advanced technology and engineering expertise. The factory produced models like the CFMoto 990/1090 V-twin and KTM's new parallel-twin range with the 999 cc RC8C engine. Additionally, some modern motorcycle models were also developed. KTM and CFMoto shared personnel, technology, and engineering expertise, which helped both companies develop more advanced motorcycles and create new models. Notable models like the CFMoto 800MT Adventure were produced using joint engines and designs from KTM and CFMoto.
This joint venture allowed customers to benefit from the innovative technology and modern motorcycles developed by both CFMoto and KTM. Furthermore, the joint venture played a crucial role in expanding the market presence of both KTM and CFMoto. Through this partnership, both companies strengthened their position in the global motorcycle market.
Both companies have been positively influenced by each other's quality and engineering expertise. KTM's Managing Director, Florian Burguet, commented on CFMoto's production strategy, saying, "We have been positively influenced by CFMoto's quality and engineering capabilities."
Following the success of their partnership with KTM, CFMoto, the rising star of the Chinese motorcycle industry, signed a joint venture agreement with another renowned motorcycle manufacturer, Yamaha, in September 2023. This partnership with Yamaha, following KTM, will help CFMoto with new innovations, global expansion, and technological advancements.
By leveraging the benefits of partnerships and investing in state-of-the-art production facilities, CFMoto has established itself as a trusted name in the motorcycle industry. The company is committed to innovation and quality assurance while proving its capabilities in the global market.
