Motorcycles are our most necessary vehicles. With technological development, the features, structure and design of motorcycles are changing day by day. Motorcycle manufacturers are trying to manufacture fuel-efficient, environment-friendly motorcycles.
To control the harmful pollution emissions of motorcycles, BS (India Standard) is usually seen in motorcycles in Bangladesh. BS (India Standard) was first implemented in 2000. Currently, BS (India Standard) 6 is in operation. However, due to the increasing growth of the motorcycle market, Euro 5 certified motorcycles of European standards have gradually started coming to Bangladesh. What are Euro Standard and Euro 5?
The European market is very important for any motorcycle manufacturer. It is essential to follow the rules and regulations of the European Union when selling motorcycles in the countries included in the European Union. With the increase in environmental concerns, the European Union introduced the first Euro Standard in 1999 for motorcycle pollution emissions. Later, after Euro 2, Euro 3 and Euro 4, the Euro 5 standard was introduced.
Euro 5 is the fifth standard imposed by the European Union to control the emission of pollutants from motorcycles. It came into effect from January 1, 2020, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of two-wheeled and three-wheeled internal combustion engines. The Euro 5 standard imposes strict limits on several key pollutants from motorcycles. These pollutants include:
● Carbon monoxide (CO): Maximum emission limit of 1.00 grams per kilometer.
● Total hydrocarbons (THC): Maximum emission limit of 0.10 grams per kilometer.
● Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC): Maximum emission limit of 0.068 grams per kilometer.
● Nitrogen oxides (NOx): Maximum emission limit is now 0.06 grams/km, up from 0.09 grams/km.
● Particulate matter (PM): Euro 5 introduces a particulate matter limit of 0.0045 grams per kilometer for the first time.
By reducing polluting gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, Euro 5 reduces the health risks associated with air pollution. According to the European Environment Agency, transport emissions are responsible for about 25% of air pollution-related deaths each year, and Euro 5 has been proven effective in reducing this pollution.
Euro 5 also brings changes to the emission sustainability regulations for motorcycles. According to the previous Euro 4 standard, a motorcycle required certification after every 20,000 km of riding in Europe, but in the Euro 5 standard, this has been extended to the lifetime of the vehicle.
Let's find out which Euro 5 certified motorcycles are currently available in the Bangladeshi market:
CF Moto, which recently entered the domestic market, has brought 3 of its motorcycles to Bangladesh. Among them are the CFMOTO 250NK (priced at Tk. 3,48,500) and CFMOTO 300SR (priced at Tk. 4,58,500) Euro 5 standard motorcycles, while the CFMOTO 250SR (priced at Tk. 3,88,500) is a Euro 4 standard motorcycle.
The Euro 5 standard is an important step towards reducing the impact of vehicle emissions on climate change and public health. The standard also regulates noise emissions and helps create a cleaner and healthier environment by significantly reducing the levels of harmful pollutant gases in the air.
