Passengers and Sidecars
From very early days, the problem of carrying a passenger and luggage was a subject of many different ideas. These resolved themselves at first into the pillion set which subsequently joined to the saddle, and finally became the dual seat fitted to most motorcycles. This provides passenger carrying ability for the absolute minimum increase in cost and weight.
Further early experiments to provide more carrying capacity, produced the sidecar.
At one time these were highly popular but are now seen as there job is more normally carried out by a small motorcar. The requirements of the machine that make it suitable for sidecar work are such that despite the high power of many today’s larger motorcycles, they are not fully suited for sidecar use.
Beside this a new class includes one of the specialist machines, the Scooter.
