Advantages and disadvantages of motorcycle eFI system

At these days almost everyone is surrounded by the new technologies. Peoples of every age and sector need the new technology for their own purpose. No one can say that I can go beyond the facilities of modern technology. Developing countries like ours are also now using latest technologies which are already released worldwide. For example we can say few years past in our country feature mobile phones with buttons were very popular, but today with the help of technology and innovation we are now using smart phones which can be operated by touching the screen. In every section technology is now developing very rapidly all over the world. Many changes are also located at the vehicles also, advanced and electrical features are added at motorcycles and others transports. Electronic fuel injection system is also a biggest invention among the latest technologies. This technology is now used in motorcycles and others vehicles and it can be said that this fuel injection technology contains its own brain to operate this system. In 1980s this technology is first used for the motorcycles. The function of the Fuel Injection System is to regulate and optimize the fuel/air ratio that enters into the vehicle’s engine. Fuel injection has recently become the primary fuel delivery system used instead of carburetors at the petrol engines.


Electronic fuel injection (FI)system
A fuel injection system is a computer controlled fuel delivery system used in automotive petrol engines. The ECU examines various sensors located on the vehicle and makes the purpose of how much fuel to allow the engine can have based on this information. The computer will open and close the injectors allowing gasoline into the engine based on the sensor inputs and the fuel map programmed into the computer. Electronic fuel injection system consists of electronic mechanism and sensors. It must be kept clean and well regulate in order to make best use of the engine’s power and efficiency and to reduce gas burning up. The various sensors (RPM, engine temperature, air temperature, throttle position, manifold pressure, and crankshaft position) provide information on operating conditions and load on the engine. Technician who works with this system can guarantee that fuel injection system remains highly efficient. For better understanding, let’s compare this with the opposite system, carburetor. Every bike engine requires an air fuel mixture for proper combustion inside. So the mixture need t be perfect for superior performance. Sometimes in different situation the mixture of air and fuel cannot be perfect at the demand of situation in this type of condition it has to be manually adjusted on a carburetor using a big screwdriver. On the other hand these entire disturbances are taken care of in a Fuel Injection system because it is controlled using an ECU (Electronic Control Unit). It contains fuel maps which adjust the air fuel mixture according to the riding state of affairs.


Sensors of FI system
Fuel injection system requires few sensors to operate its system.
Oxygen sensor: This sensor is also known as exhaust gas sensor. This sensor measures the oxygen levels in the engine for checking the effectiveness of combustion. If the oxygen levels increase it will make the sensor's output voltage lower and a decreased oxygen level causes increased output of sensor voltage.

Throttle position sensor: This sensor is placed over the throttle body and converts the throttle valve movement in to voltage signal. As the throttle closes/ opens the power decreases/ increases accordingly and the fuel supply will be delivered as mush it needs.

Intake air temperature sensor: This sensor is used to measure the temperature of the air and the inside engine. Cold weather required more power and fuel than the warm weather because air is much denser. With the help of ECU perfect fuel-air ratio can be supplied to the engine with this sensor.

Vehicle speed sensor: It is located on the speedometer or the transmission gearbox. Speed sensor produces the signal in percentage to the vehicles speed. After receiving the signal, the speedometer uses it for indicator act and change to ON/OFF signal by intensify the signal.

Oil temperature sensor: This sensor is used to measure the temperature of the oil inside the engine. To provide good performance it will take steps to proper oil supply.

Lean angle sensor: This sensor is very effective because carburetors cannot provide proper oil at the lean angle position but this system will can solve this problem easily. At the curve position this system will provide propel fuel supply with the help of this sensor.

Apart from these sensors few more can be found at the EFI system.

Fuel map
Fuel map is a preset program. With it can be measured how much fuel will be used. Many sports bike contains this programming system and those can be set by our own choice, many riding modes are also available. Such as ECO, Normal, Sport etc. According to the selected mode EFI system will provide fuel to the engine.

Electronic control unit (ECU)
This system can be compare as the brain of machines. This system is operated by software systems and can be controlled with computers. It will act according to the command, which the user will input.










How a fuel injection system works
Fuel is directly inserted into the combustion chamber of the engine but there are many things which are needed to be taken care of. EFI system contains few steps to control the whole system. The Fuel injection unit has an electrical pump, so that the fuel can be injected easily and with force to make sure the amount of fuel is accurate with the demand of situation. With the help of this pump pressure sensors can be able to calculate the exact measure of the fuel and deliver. So when the engine is running, as an alternative of regular valves, the fuel from the pressure pump is injected in a straight line into the combustion chamber using nozzles. There are sensors which are attached with the nozzle. Those sensors close to the nozzle makes sure the right quantity of fuel is inserted inside the engine. This rate of fuel injection is controlled by the ECU (electronic control system). At these days riding has became very first and traffic is also a big issue, so stop and go is also a part of riding; in this case the ECU system is endlessly observing the throttle input. It will provide fuel depending on the throttle movement. So in every situation engine will be at its best presentation.

Advantages of EFI system

Disadvantages of EFI system
- High maintenance cost
- High initial cost.
- Lack of technicians.

Because this technology is very upgraded it is not in reach of every people but it can be said that it is all about time that every motorcycle company will try to use this latest technology for their bikes and it will be available to every rider with reasonable price. We all know that it is used instead of carburetor but it is not that carburetor is useless. Both have different advantages. It depend on riders choice how they want ride their own way.
