Sometimes your bike tire seems to be perfect at your eyes but after 12000-20000 miles your bike tire will become unsafe and it needs to be changed as early as possible.
Tire is one of the most used and visible part of a motorcycle. Biker rides over the bike and bike depends on tires. And because of this reason it is the most necessary part of a motorcycle. Different motorbikes contain different tires. Few are width, few are thinner, and few are bigger or smaller etc many types. Varieties of designs are also available for those tires. Sometimes we face a regular problems, such a as what should be the perfect air pressure for my tire, which brand or category of tire should I use, what is the measurement of my tire, manufacturing or expiry date of my bikes tire, when I need to change my tire etc. All these questions are important and every answer can be found at the sidewall of your bikes tire. You will find special marks, symbols or numbers at the sidewall of your tire and if you decode those then you will find your answers. If you are known to all those symbols then it will be easier for you to understand all the meanings and as a result you won’t be bothered by the unskilled mechanics. So let us be familiar with few symbols and numbers of tires.
Tire size:
Every single tire has its own size and it can be measured by two ways. First its width and second its radius. For example, if the tire contains (3.25-18) these types of numbers then it means that, it is 3.25 inches width and the radius is 18 inches. Sometimes tires contains (110/90-17) these types of numbers which means it has 110mm width, 90mm height and diameter is 17 inches.
Tire pressure measurement:
Different tire has its own air pressure limit. And how much pressure you need to maintain it is written at the sidewall of your tire. Its measure unit is PSI (pound per square inch). One of the best reasons of tire crumbling is tire pressure. Road grip of the tire depends mostly on the tire pressure. If the tire pressure is too high then the tire bit won’t be able to hold on with roads. At the other hand if you maintain low tire pressure then your tire will be heated up early and decay very fast.
Now the question is how will you know the exact tire pressure? Answer is very easier then the question because every company provides the maximum PSI limit at the sidewall. Not only that you will find the max load capacity of your tire at the sidewalls. Maximum tire pressure limit which are given are not the best measure it can vary on your personal use. So if you ride your bike without any pillion then maintain your tire pressure bellow the max PSI.
Manufacture date of tires:
If you are a regular motorcycle user then your bike tires will crumble and it is usual but if you don’t then? Normally people will think that their bikes tire is fine but they don’t even know that UV radiation, ozone, oxygen and many more other things can hamper your bikes tire. In one word tire becomes older. You need to have knowledge about the tires age. Almost every expert says after six years your tires need to be changed even though it is unused. In that case it is not necessary when you bought the tire but it is important to know about the manufacturing date of your bikes tire. Every tire contains its manufacturing date and it is given at the sidewall of the tire with four digits. First two digits are manufacturing week and other two are year. Such as “0614” means this tire is manufactured at the sixth week of 2014. Tires can be damaged by the sun light or extra heat. Sometimes we can see sun rot at the tires body these are the symbol of damage. Don’t underestimate the weather fact of tire damaging or crumble.
Tire Rotation:
There is a perfect method to set your tires at the motorcycle wheel or rim. Tires bit or treads are designed to rotate forward. Every tire contains a symbol or mark which indicates which way the tire will rotate.
Maximum speed capacity:
Different bikes contain different tires. So the speed capacity will decently vary. Maximum speed of tire is placed at the tires sidewall. B menas 50km/h, J means 100km/h and Z menas 240+km/h.
Maximum load capacity:
Every tire has max load capacity after that if it carries it can be defected. Its load capacity is also written at the sidewalls and because of overload it can be blast of crumble. Load capacity of a tire indicates by a letter or sometimes written exact value. Such as code 30 means this tire can carries 106kg, 40 means 140kg or 90 means 160kg.
TWI:
When you will reach the pick level of your bike your crumble tires will not be able to take the overload. Sometimes the tire seems good at your eyes but almost every tire company uses TWI (tire/tread wear indicator) for their own safety and with it you can understand when you need to change your tires. So it is also a very important part and many users do not even know about this because they cannot find this point. Tire wear indicator (TWI) is a small rubber which is placed between the tire bits. Almost every tire contains TWI and it is very smaller in size. You just have to find it. Find faster check the sidewall of tires, TWI will be written at the sidewall and arrow mark will indicate its position. At new tires it is difficult to find but at the old one you can find it easily. If the TWI rubber and the tire bit become similar then you cannot waste any time to change your tires.
More tire codes:
Without these important codes few more can be seen and they are,
M+S: MUD and SNOW. It is very easy to understand that these types of tires are capable to these two types of roads.
TL: Tube Less tires.
TT: Tube Type tires.
LL: Light Load capacity.
So we can say as if we do not like to use crumble shoes like that crumble tires are also very dangerous and they needed to be changed as early as possible. If you delay then you have to pay a big price. Alongside this we must have better knowledge about tires for our own safety. At least if I know about the tire pressure, manufacture date, maximum load capacity, and rotation side etc important things, it can save me from unexpected occurrences.
So every motorcycle user need to know these belongings about the tire.
